The files on this CD document holdings of the Ehrenberg Collection of fossil and recent micro-organisms at the Museum fuer Naturkunde, Berlin. The primary files are in the folders ECINDEX and ECDRYI, which contain scanned images of the hand-written index volumes to the Collection created by EhrenbergÕs daughter Clara. Three index volumes are present: ECDRYI, for ÔdriedÕ preparations of living cells, ECGI, a geographic index to the microfossil preparations and samples, and ECTI, a taxonomic index to the preparations of microfossils. Each page (or, for the dry preps, pair of pages) are scanned as a separate file. The letters A, B and C in the folders are merely to subdivide the files into managble numbers. The folders ECLETTER and ECDRAW give examples of the letters and drawings in the collection. Only one letter (from Darwin) is shown. The drawings show examples of diatoms, radiolarians, and foraminifera. Some are drawings of mixed taxa from a sample, others are single specimens. ECOTHER contains ASCII text files. The TOC files are table of contents files to the Geographic and Taxonomic Index volumes. The ECTRAY file is a listing of the labels found on the individual folders or ÔbooksÕ of microfossil preparations, now stored in a tray system in the collection. The listing is preliminary and still needs editing, but may help users nonetheless. The Ehrenberg Collection is described in more detail in two publications: Lazarus, D. B. (1998). The Ehrenberg Collection and its curation. In D. M. Williams & R. Huxley (Eds.), Christian Gottfried Ehrenburg [sic] (1795-1876): The man and his legacy, Special Publication no. 1. (pp. 31-48). The Linnean Society, London. Lazarus, D. B., and Jahn, R. (1998). Using the Ehrenberg Collection. Diatom Research, 13(2), 273-291. This CD should be cited as an Appendix to the Diatom Research publication. - Dave Lazarus, Berlin, Feb. 26, 1999.
